Por que as pessoas fazem o TOEFL?
As pessoas costumam fazer o TOEFL para:
Admissão em universidades, principalmente nos Estados Unidos e no Canadá, onde muitos cursos exigem a prova

De que banda eu preciso?
Exigências reais de banda
Quanto você precisa tirar depende do programa, e cada universidade define seu próprio corte. Em 2026 o TOEFL passou para uma escala de 1 a 6, e por dois anos seu boletim também mostra a nota antiga de 0 a 120, então você verá as duas. A maioria dos programas acadêmicos fica em torno da banda 4 a 5. Veja exemplos reais, com as fontes:

Como é a prova de listening do TOEFL?
A seção de listening foi reformulada em 21 de janeiro de 2026. Agora tem cerca de 47 perguntas curtas e dura por volta de 29 minutos. Os trechos são curtos e diretos, não as palestras longas da prova antiga. Há quatro tipos de tarefa de listening, com os nomes que o ETS usa:

Cada trecho toca uma vez só. Não tem repetição, então você precisa acompanhar a fala real de primeira, mas pode fazer anotações enquanto ouve.
As seções de reading e listening agora se adaptam a você. Seu desempenho no primeiro bloco de perguntas decide se o próximo bloco vai ser mais fácil ou mais difícil. O caminho mais fácil tem teto na faixa 4, e só o caminho mais difícil chega à faixa 5 ou 6. Então, se sua meta é alta, ajuda treinar um pouco acima do seu nível de conforto.
A maioria das vozes é norte-americana, mas a prova também usa sotaques britânico, australiano e neozelandês.
Os temas são acadêmicos e do dia a dia do campus, como uma palestra de ciências, uma aula de história ou um estudante resolvendo algo numa secretaria. A linguagem é mais formal do que uma conversa do dia a dia.
Nível e vocabulário
Que nível e quantas palavras eu preciso?
Para ouvir você precisa de muito menos palavras do que para ler. Pesquisas mostram que cerca de 3.000 palavras comuns cobrem por volta de 95% da fala normal, e as primeiras 1.000 já cobrem a maior parte do que as pessoas dizem.
No TOEFL você também encontra palavras acadêmicas e de temas específicos, como termos de uma palestra de ciências ou história. Por isso não precisa de um vocabulário enorme. Que tipo de vídeo eu devo assistir para praticar a escuta do TOEFL?

De que pontuação eu preciso no TOEFL?

Qual é a minha pontuação do TOEFL na nova escala de 1 a 6?
Desde janeiro de 2026, cada seção é pontuada numa faixa de 1 a 6, com meios pontos, e a nota geral é a média das quatro seções. A ETS alinha as faixas ao CEFR: a faixa 3 é mais ou menos B1, a faixa 4 é B2, a faixa 5 é C1 e a faixa 6 é C2. Por dois anos, seu relatório de notas também mostra a pontuação antiga de 0 a 120, para você comparar as duas. A tabela oficial está no site da ETS.
Como funciona a prova adaptativa de listening?
As seções de leitura e listening agora se adaptam a você. Você responde a um primeiro bloco de questões, e o seu desempenho decide se o próximo bloco vai ser mais fácil ou mais difícil. O caminho mais fácil tem teto na faixa 4, então só o caminho mais difícil chega à faixa 5 ou 6. Se a sua meta é alta, você vai precisar lidar com trechos mais difíceis com confiança, por isso ajuda treinar um pouco acima do seu nível.
Quais sotaques aparecem na prova de listening do TOEFL?

Para listening, sim. O áudio de livro didático costuma ser lento e bem claro. O vídeo real usa velocidade normal e falas acadêmicas de verdade, mais perto do que a prova exige, e as imagens ajudam você a adivinhar palavras que ainda não conhece.
